Every grower remembers the first time they watched their cannabis plants take shape — the excitement, the learning curve, and the reward of seeing healthy green buds forming under the right light. Whether you hold a Personal Grow Licence or are just beginning your journey under Health Canada’s ACMPR program, growing medical cannabis isn’t just about producing your own medicine — it’s about understanding how to care for it at every stage, from seed to storage.
Strong roots lead to strong plants, but what many new growers learn the hard way is that even the healthiest buds can lose their potency, aroma, and therapeutic value if they’re not properly cured and stored. After months of dedication, the last thing you want is to ruin your harvest because of poor storage conditions. Light, humidity, heat, and air exposure can all weaken cannabinoids and terpenes — the compounds responsible for the effectiveness and character of your medicine.
Once harvested, patience is key. After drying, buds still contain internal moisture that needs to be slowly released through curing. Store them in airtight glass jars, never plastic, and keep them in a dark, cool space between 18–21°C with humidity around 58–62%. This environment protects your cannabis from mould, drying out, or becoming harsh to consume.
During the curing stage, “burping” your jars becomes essential. For the first week or two, open your jars once or twice a day for 5–10 minutes. This allows trapped gases and excess moisture to escape while introducing a small amount of fresh air. As the buds balance, you can reduce burping to once every few days. You’ll know you’ve done it right when your buds feel dry yet springy and the scent has developed into a deep, rich aroma.
This process preserves both potency and purity. Veterans using medical cannabis for PTSD or chronic pain know how much consistency matters — a well-cured and properly stored batch provides reliable relief and smoother effects.
Patient educators often remind growers that while doctors can authorize your use of medical cannabis, they don’t provide cultivation or curing guidance. That’s where education makes the difference. Learning how to grow, cure, and store your medicine properly ensures that every ounce of effort you’ve invested pays off.
