Health Canada used to issue official medical marijuana access cards, small laminated IDs that many of us remember as hard-earned proof of legitimacy. Those were the good old days. Some of us at GrowLegally still have ours tucked away like souvenirs from a time when patients had to fight a little harder for their right to use cannabis as medicine.
Back then, even if you only needed cannabis for possession—not to grow—you had to fill out a 17-page application. It all started with a signed Form B from a supportive healthcare practitioner, followed by a lengthy wait for Health Canada to process the paperwork. If approved, your card would finally arrive in the mail months later. It wasn’t easy, but that card meant everything. It gave you peace of mind, even when the world around you didn’t yet understand medical cannabis.
Today, things have evolved. Health Canada no longer issues those plastic ID cards. Instead, patients are prescribed cannabis through an authorization. If you're not applying for a grow licence, all you need is this prescription, which outlines how many grams per day you're approved to use. The Licensed Producer (LP) you register with might even issue a membership card for convenience, and we have to admit, some of those are pretty cool.
If you do want to grow your own, you’ll receive a paper licence directly from Health Canada. It includes your name, the date of issuance, approved address, grams per day, plant limits, and whether your production is approved for indoor or outdoor use. It’s functional, legal, and recognized across the country.

Patients reach out to us every day asking how to get a cannabis prescription in Canada. The answer is simpler than it used to be. You don’t need a folder full of diagnostics or months of waiting. If you’re experiencing symptoms that affect your quality of life—like chronic pain, PTSD, arthritis, or anxiety—you may be eligible. And unlike recreational dispensaries, a proper medical cannabis consultation in Ontario gives you the right documentation, ongoing support, and access to regulated Licensed Producers.
Our roots go back to the early MMAR days, and we’ve stayed committed through every regulatory shift—from MMAR to ACMPR, and now under the Cannabis Act. As one of the best-known and trusted medical cannabis clinics in Canada, we know this system inside and out.
Medical cannabis isn’t about hype or trends. It’s about relief, function, and dignity. We’re proud to continue supporting Canadians with honest, compassionate care—because access should never feel out of reach.
